Data Challenges

Founded in 2018, Maev is a pioneer in the pet space, producing human-grade raw pet food, with a mission to improve pet’s overall health. What started as a pet project for it’s co-founders, today Maev is a nationwide subscription service, delivering vet-backed, flash-frozen raw protein food and supplements.

However, as Maev expanded, the team faced a dual challenge with the complexities of shipping raw, frozen dog food. Shipping delays led to thawed deliveries, which led to customer unhappiness. Maev would then have to ship another order, doubling their COGs, reducing margins, and increasing customer support time. Compounding the issue was the team’s struggle to identify the root causes of these delays. The team grappled with disparate sources, inconsistent dashboards and challenges in aligning on essential metrics due to diverse backgrounds and interpretations.

We’ve made at least a dozen business decisions based on the data that prior to Daasity would have been really manual Excel number crunching for me just to get the same data.

Data Solutions

Maev partnered with Daasity to bring all of their data in one centralized place, with insights refreshed daily and automatically calculated. Utilizing Daasity’s Operations dashboard, they were able to solve their shipping problem. They identified that packages shipping through UPS on Thursdays caused the majority of their shipping delays. They also discovered that including shipping insurance on all orders saved the compnay money vs. having to cover the cost of shipping replacement orders.

By shifting their shipping schedule to Monday-Wednesday and adding shipping insurance, Maev was able to reduce the need for reshipments, improve their gross margins, and increase customer lifetime value by providing a better experience.

We turned on Daasity after trying out several platforms and still spending hours weekly for basic reporting. Daasity has been a huge time saver and has allowed us to quickly generate robust dashboards and visualize data across sources all in one place. A lot of platforms make that claim, but few actually deliver.

The Results

Maev’s adoption of Daasity as a unified data solution resulted in significant business improvements. Aside from resolving shipping issues, the company has streamlined meeting times, alleviated siloed teams stemming from inconsistent data reporting across different tools, and established a common data language and vocabulary, enhancing team communication and optimizing time.

In Maev’s weekly meetings, each team can confidently report and plan from their data in order to hit company KPI goals. This allows the team to make data-empowered plans for the brand as a whole, ensuring that labs, poodles, pugs, and every other day remain fed, fit, and happy.

We’ve seen a dramatic shift in how each team member thinks about their to-do list because they’re looking at metrics instead of me handing them a list. They get more ownership over it and they can do the strategy thinking themselves, in a way that pre-Daasity, we wish we had.
